This is an example of a first pattern shove M43 shovel cover with the fixed hook on the back. Marked BOYT -43-.
These were issued with the M1943 entrenching tool which was a copy of the German klappspaten, and itself far superior to the WWI M1910 shovels still in use at the start of the war.
